Being a country with a lot of volcanoes, Indonesia offers wide range of different tracks for hiking. All tracks offers different challenges, different view, and different attraction. Some of these tracks are harder to do than the others, some are already been made easy, some even complete with jeep and guide to take you to the top. You can choose which one you’d like to hike according your strength, preparations, and budget.

To try to reach Carstensz Pyramid on the top of Jayawijaya (4.844 m asl) at your first time hiking would probably be a little out of your league. If you feel are a beginner at hiking and would like to try easier track first, here Travelicious give you list of beginner-friendly volcano to hike.

1. Mount Papandayan (2.665 m asl)

Mount Papandayan located at Garut, West Java. This mountain has its own charm. On the way to the top you can see some craters like Mas Crater, Baru Craters, and Manuk Crater. And you can walk among dead forest where all the tree are dead and dried up because volcanic activity. There are also a beautiful edelweiss field called Tegal Alun. Most people hike Mount Papandayan just to reach and spend some time at Tegal Alun because not much to enjoy at the summit. To reach Tegal Alun Papandayan, takes about four hours hiking, and another two hours to reach the summit from Tegal alun. Even though Mount Papandayan known as beginner-friendly volcano, you still have to prepare your stamina.

2. Mount Batur (1.717 m asl)

Mount Batur located at Bali, in Kintamani district. This pretty mountain is quite beginner-friendly and only took two hours hike to the top by fit hikers. At the summit, you’ll find one of the most beautiful caldera in the world, with Batur Lake as its center. The best view from Gunung Batur is its sunrise that absolutely worth the hike. Blow your stress off, move your body, and hike Mount Batur.

In the east side of Java, Banyuwangi has a beginner-friendly volcano to hike, Mount Ijen. Here you can enjoy the amazing phenomenon of blue fire if you arrive just after midnight. If you choose to do so, make sure you have a warm clothes on you and bring flashlight. Bring some snack too and wait for the sunrise, because the sunrise is also superb. From the first hiking post, you will need around 2,5 hours to reach the top. You have to be careful though, because the track  is sandy and quite steep at some spot. On your way back, have a stop at coffee plantation at the foot of Ijen caldera and you can visit waterfall, or hot spring, or just take a break and enjoy the scenery.

3. Mount Kelimutu (1.690 m asl)

Mount Kelimutu is located at Ende district, Nusa Tenggara Timur. The view of Kelimutu lakes that can change its color will greet you at the top. The First lake called Tiwu Ata Mbupu (lake of ancestor’s soul), the second called Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (lake of young people’s soul), and the third called Tiwu Ata Polo (lake of evil spirit). Mount Kelimutu is sacred for local people and it is considered a haunted place. They say the reasons of why the lake change color because of the neglected ancestral souls. Interesting, right? A good solid track already prepared so you can walk without worrying to get lost. The hike itself only took about half an hour.

4. Mount Sibayak (2.094 m asl)

When you spend some time at Berastagi district, North Sumatera, You can find a beginner-friendly volcano, Mount Sibayak. Located only 50 km from Medan city, this mountain offers a beautiful view of Medan city from afar especially at night, and awesome crater. The easiest track of this mountain can be hiked for two hours. As a bonus, at the foot of mount sibayak, there are amazing two color Sibolangit Waterfall

5. Mount Prau (3.565 m asl)

Mount Prau has the broadest summit in Indonesia, it makes this place a favorite spot for camping while waiting the golden sunrise. From here you can see the top of Mount Sindoro-

Sumbing, Merapi, and Merbabu from afar. It makes the view magnificent. You can start from Patak Banteng Village, Dieng, Central Java. The hiking will take about three hours.
